Free mobile zoo workshops in Staffordshire

Caudwell Children, the Staffordshire based charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families, has announced that it is to run a series of FREE mobile zoo workshops for disabled children, and those with additional needs, in Staffordshire, through the summer school holidays.

The fun packed sessions, delivered in partnership with Zoo2U, will take place at a number of venues across the county and will see children and young people, up to 18, getting up close and personal with some furry friends and some curious crustaceans.

The sessions have been designed to develop skills, confidence and self-esteem, whilst having fun.

As Becky Deri, from Caudwell Children, explained: “This is a fantastic opportunity for children to get outside and have some fun during the summer holidays.

“Zoo2U has been delivering sensory experiences for disabled children, and those with additional needs, for many years.

“All of Zoo2U’s animals are extremely friendly and love to be handled which makes for a great sensory experience.

“Participants will get the chance to discover the different textures of fur, feathers, spikes, shells and scales through meeting mammals, birds and reptiles.”

Taking part in a zoo workshop has been shown to help increase socialisation and encourage communication, whilst reducing boredom and anxiety.

“All the sessions will be inspiring, educational and interactive,” continued Becky. “The array of animals vary depending on the season but parents can be confident that there will be a good selection of animals on show.”

Zoo2U has a varied collection of animals including snakes, skunks, owls, hedgehogs, tortoise, meerkats, crabs and chameleons.

The mobile zoo workshops funded by Aiming High Staffordshire, will give families the opportunity to spend time together as siblings, parents and carers can also attend the sessions.

Whilst participants are sure to have bags of fun Becky says there is a serious side to the workshops. She said: “The activity days also help children to mix in groups which boosts their confidence.

“It’s also a great way to develop listening skills and learn how to respond to others. So whilst participants will be having a great time, during the fun filled sessions, they will also be developing many invaluable skills.”

Becky says that the charity’s activity days have always been extremely popular and is encouraging parents to get in touch as soon as possible as there are a limited number of places available.
