Luke – Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 – Powered Wheelchair
Luke loves nothing more than to watch his Father play his favourite sport – American Football. Luke has Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2. This is a degenerative condition that restricts movement throughout the body and it’s left Luke unable to walk.
Luke was unable watch his Father play American Football as his previous wheelchair wasn’t safe to travel over grass. Since Luke received his brand new powered wheelchair he is able to safely travel across the grass. He has also been assisting the Head Coach and helping to choose plays during the games.
Luke’s Mother, Lisa says the chair has had a huge impact on her son. She said: “Luke absolutely loves American Football but his old wheelchair was really unsteady on the grass. It was almost impossible to for him to watch his dad safely, as there was a real danger that his chair would topple over. It was heart breaking that he couldn’t really enjoy the game he’s so passionate about. The chair allows him to adopt a standing position, stretch his legs and body when he’s uncomfortable, keep up with friends when out walking, and reach into areas that were previously inaccessible. He has so much more confidence now and has a much greater level of independence. Simply put everything is so much easier now and as a family we think anything is possible!”
Luke, who also follows the Cincinnati Bengals and Gloucester Rugby Club, is excited about the future. He said: “I can’t wait to assist the Coach. The new chair is much sturdier than the old one and allows me to travel over the grass easily. I can access so many more areas now. The new season has just begun and I can’t wait to get involved. The club are even allowing me to flip the coin before each match.”
