Registration opens for Christmas family fun run

Caudwell Children, the Staffordshire based charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families, has announced that registration is now open for its annual, Yuletide, ‘Elf Run’.

The non-competitive 5km family event will take place at 11.00am on Sunday 1st December, 2019, with runners setting off from the charity’s recently opened HQ, the Caudwell International Children’s Centre, located on Innovation Way, Keele Science & Innovation Park, Newcastle-under-Lyme, ST5 5NT.

Runners will then follow a route that weaves its way through the Keele University Campus, before finishing in the spectacular countryside that surrounds the charity’s new state-of-the-art home.

The charity is now calling on individuals, families and corporate companies to register on the Christmas themed fun run, that sees many participants running in festive fancy dress.

Kate Sherwin, Events and Challenge Coordinator for Caudwell Children, says the ‘Elf Run’ is suitable for the whole family. As she explained: “The ‘Elf Run’ has been designed to be family friendly and the route is fully accessible for buggies and wheelchairs.

“You can run, jog, skip or simply walk around the course, and because many people dress in Elf costumes, or other Christmas outfits, there’s a fantastic, Yuletide atmosphere around the event.”

All participants will be given a FREE elf hat before the start of the race and as they cross the finishing line they will be presented with a unique ‘Elf Run’ medal.

Kate says that the event is perfectly suited for families with disabled children. She said: “Research shows that 78% of disabled children have no access to activities outside their home, whilst 75% of families say that their isolation has caused anxiety and depression.

“So this fully inclusive fundraising event is a great opportunity for disabled children to get out of the house and enjoy themselves. It will help to build their confidence and self-esteem and it will also give parents the opportunity to develop friendships and form lasting social networks.”

Kate says that previous events have attracted families from across Staffordshire, East Shropshire and South Cheshire. “It’s a fantastic mix of people and we’ve welcomed runners from across the county and beyond,” she explained: “Runners have participated alongside beneficiaries of the charity and it’s guaranteed that there will be a lot of laughing, posing and selfie taking.

“Many people repeatedly tell me that the ‘Elf Run’ really kick-started the festive season for them.

“Once again there will be prizes for the best fancy dress so I would urge people to be creative in their Christmas costume making.”

Entry to the ‘Elf Run’ costs £15 per adult, which includes one FREE child’s place. Each additional child is £6.

Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship for the charity and Kate concluded: “It’s a great day out for the family and a fantastic way to keep fit, have fun and raise vital funds for Caudwell Children, which will allow us to support even more disabled children throughout the region.”
